Congratulations NSF NCIIA awardees
Congratulations to two of our NSF CREATE-IGERT trainees on their recent NSF National Collegiate Inventors & Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) awards!
IGERT Trainee Lucas Arzola and team:
“Inserogen is a biotech startup that aims to commercialize SwiftVax, a technology that enables the use of non-transgenic tobacco plants as protein biofactories. This proprietary technology platform is a disruptive innovation that can revolutionize biomanufacturing. Our capabilities of high-volume, cost-efficient, and accelerated manufacturing would enable the production of live saving vaccines in response to outbreaks, such as the H1N1 pandemic. The SwiftVax manufacturing platform can be customized for production of any high-value recombinant protein, and it would enable new markets in both developed and developing countries.”
IGERT trainee Mark Lemos and team:
Helios - University of California-Davis http://nciia.org/node/1708
“Despite the indisputable need for the development of renewable energy sources, the current options for renewable fuel (ethanol, butanol, biodiesel, methane, and hydrogen) are heavily based on food crops. One promising option is cellulosic biofuels, which have the potential to replace 30% of current demand for transportation fuels. However, the decomposition of cellulosic biomass presents a formidable challenge that requires costly, energy-intensive and environmentally detrimental pretreatment steps….This team is researching the viability of duckweed, a tiny, stem-less monocot plant that grows on the surface of ponds, as a cellulosic biofuel. Duckweed has a 2-3 day doubling time, utilizes non-arable land, can grow all year round and does not require extensive biomass pretreatment for biofuel production.”
If you have news to share with our IGERT community, please let me know and I will circulate to the listserv.
Cheers,
Denneal

Call for entries: The Art of Symbiosis - Everyday Choices for Sustainability Video Contest
Together with colleagues from the energy efficiency and art and design communities, I recently joined a committee organizing a video contest called The Art of Symbiosis – Everyday Choices for Sustainability.
The project invites students, faculty, and staff on California college campuses to share their stories about the ideas, people, projects, technologies, and ways of living that could shift our direction toward a more positive future and to make the greater community aware of the ripple effect of daily choices. This could be any daily choice made, from lighting (a personal favorite of mine, of course) to water use, to transportation decisions. We selected a video contest because we believe it is an affordable and effective method to share these visions.
Through short video submissions, we are seeking the voices of campus communities to inspire awareness and catalyze choices. Videos can be up to 2 minutes in length. Feel free to upload up to three (3) entries per group or individual.
The juried contest will be presented through the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference at California State University, Long Beach, July 10-12, 2011. Prizes will be awarded.
For details on the contest visit: http:// cahigheredusustainability.org/ program/videocontest.asp
Please circulate this email and enclosure freely and I hope you will consider participating. This contest is an effort to bring creative expression and personal stories about sustainable living to the 10th annual California Higher Education Sustainability Conference and to the greater community, something I feel is worthwhile.
Grab your iPhone, Flip Video, or video camera and make something.
Best regards,
Kelly

Our research: Climate summit posters
UC Davis is probing for climate change solutions on many fronts, offering hope for a greener, healthier tomorrow. To make this research accessible to all, the campus presents on the Web a series of 49 educational posters that showcase projects, programs, technologies and accomplishments in three broad areas: energy, environmental sciences and stewardship, and sustainable food and agriculture. The posters debuted at Governors' Global Climate Summit 3, held at UC Davis in November 2010. [ More… ]
